9AM-12PM The Art of Chinese Calligraphy - a Workshop with Diana Ho
The first portion of the class will be a Chinese calligraphy exhibition by the instructor, followed by an introduction to Chinese calligraphy and demonstration. In Chinese calligraphy, Chinese characters can be written according to five major script styles, including Seal Script篆, Clerical Script 隶, Regular Script正, Running Script行, and Cursive Script草. Mastering calligraphy builds the foundation for learning Chinese painting.
During the hands-on portion of class, you will learn the correct way to hold a brush, how to control and balance the flow of ink and water, how to make your own ink. Since some Chinese characters are based on pictographs, writing Chinese is almost like drawing, and calligraphy even more so!
After you have mastered the brush freely, you will learn step by step how to write the basic strokes in order and learn 20 basic characters, we will use the regular script正in this class. Next, you will learn the basic eight kinds of brush strokes, and the specific way each should be drawn. If you are up for a challenge, you can even learn how to write your name in Chinese characters.
Just like drawing and painting, calligraphy takes practice. Use your intuition and have fun!
This workshop is an exclusive benefit for PCAC Art Club Members only!
As with all Workshops, all supplies are provided by the Instructor. The only thing you will need is a small container for water to rinse your brush, and a notebook/writing implement - you are welcome to bring your own brush(es) only if you wish.
